Benalús the Beautiful

Marbella’s ‘Mila de Oro’ or Golden Mile is one of the most famous addresses in Europe. It represents a luxury lifestyle and its prestigious properties amply reflect its upmarket status. This five kilometre stretch from Rio Verde, east of Puerto Banús to Plaza Bocanegra in Marbella contains some of the most celebrated real estate in Spain, including a King’s palace and life in this oasis of sunny splendour is every bit as sumptuous as you might expect. It hasn’t always been called this Golden Mile; this soubriquet was coined by German singer turned property developer, Roy Boston and it has stuck, largely because it so accurately captures the ambience of this ‘millionaire’s row’.

The Golden Mile has a well-established housing stock and new properties are few and far between. Current buyers are seeking contemporary new builds and until recently they had to look beyond this prestigious area, sometimes very far beyond, which for many overseas investors wasn’t exactly what they wanted, but now there is a luxury solution on hand – the exclusive residential community of Benalús.

This project was on hold for a while, mostly due to the issues with building licences and planning permission at Marbella Town Hall. As many will be aware, the Marbella property market has been static in recent years due to the annulment of its General Urban Planning regulations (PGOU), which have only recently been reinstated. One of the effects of this was a slow down, to almost a halt, when it came to granting building licences for new construction in the Marbella area at a time when buyer demand was increasing.

The Benalús complex sits on a plot 9,326m2, of which 5,700m2 is dedicated to the luxury apartments and recreational areas. These include the beautifully designed sub-tropical gardens, a chill out area with luxurious sunbeds, spa, gym, solarium and swimming pools, plus indoor swimming facilities. Another 7,000m2 is dedicated to green areas surrounding the apartments, where residents can stroll, jog or find a quiet place to sit and contemplate. Everything has been designed to create a five-star ambience and there are communal relaxation areas that feel more like the lobby of a leading hotel than an apartment complex.

The residences are divided into three buildings with apartments on the ground floor plus three upper floors, with the top two offering duplex penthouses. In total there are only 27 homes in Benalús, making it the kind of boutique development that guarantees privacy and tranquillity. There is a choice of two, three or four-bedroom apartments and each one comes with garage space and a separate storeroom, which is invaluable and a feature that can be hard to find in other developments.

Quality is the watchword of the Benalús developers. They have sourced the best quality materials for use in all aspects of the building and, as many know, with the devil being in the detail, they have taken great care to furnish each apartment with the most contemporary, stylish and robust fixtures and fittings.

The master bedrooms are a good example of the care and attention to detail that is evident throughout. They are spacious, and have an en suite bathroom that can easily become a private oasis. They also have romantic French windows opening on to a private garden, and there aren’t many apartments anywhere on the Costa del Sol offering this kind of ambience.

Benalús offers individualised apartment layouts. For example the Penthouse Plus is the maximum expression of exclusivity. This incomparable penthouse is arranged over three floors with an approximate surface of 800m2. The main floor houses a living room, dinning room and a kitchen in a layout that is both open and functional, with access to their own terrace. There is also a bedroom in this floor with en suite bathroom. The second floor has a suite and two additional bedrooms, all of them with their own dressing room and en suite bathroom. The large spaces, the luminosity of the rooms and the views from the terraces invite you to relax. On the top floor you can enjoy the hydromassage pool, a barbecue with friends, or some relaxing moments at the chill-out area by a real suspended garden.

The Ground Floor Plus residences have a covered terrace leading directly to a splash pool and green lawn. These apartments have a 60 square metre suite with a built-in dressing room and its own bathroom, in addition to a master room and three additional bedrooms. All of them are equipped with en suite bathroom and dressing room. And, all bedrooms have an access to a terrace that opens on to the garden. The kitchen, the living room and dinning room form a functional space that is open to the garden light. Unbelievably, there is a real orchard that integrates with the pool-solarium area. One of the most appealing features of this home is the basement-loft: a perfect play area or a magnificent apartment for guests with total privacy.

Other styles available include the Duplex, the First Floor, the standard Penthouse and standard Ground Floor. However, all of them are certainly not average or standard.

La Albaida, a Marbella interior design studio was brought in to provide a style that is the height of contemporary elegance. Muted shades dominate throughout, complemented by natural woods, with the occasional splash of rich colour adding dramatic contrast and drawing the eye to the amazing contrast of light and shadow. The spacious terraces accessed through large glass doors are a seamless extension of the indoor area and provide enough space for sunbathing, or hosting a dinner party.

The Benalús residences are a reflection of the majesty of Marbella’s Golden Mile and as it is one of the only new developments on offer here, it has a touch of exclusivity that you simply won’t find elsewhere on the Costa del Sol.
