A Bite of the Big Apple

Marbella-based art gallery Wadström Tönnheim made a successful guest appearance at the Empty Circle art space in Brooklyn, New York during the prestigious September Art Week.

Despite the intense competition from the Armory Show, one of the biggest and most renowned art fairs in the United States, Wadström Tönnheim’s group exhibition “Dissolvement” attracted over 100 people on the opening evening. The exhibition showcased works from eight artists from five different countries, curated by Swedish gallerist and collector Mattias Tönnheim. The theme focused on the concept of “when and where does a motive start or stop being a motive.”

Regarding the success of the exhibition and its theme, Tönnheim explained, “I’m truly happy and honoured to be able to present this fantastic line-up of intriguing artists and grateful for the support from Empty Circle and local friends in New York City. Regarding the theme ‘dissolvement’ and the never-ending, and sometimes futile, discussable concept of ‘abstract and figurative,’ I have had several discussions with both artists and colleagues but also from conversations with people that are not from the art world about ‘where do we draw the line...?’” Tönnheim prefers the terminology figurative versus non-figurative and believes that the question of “what is abstract and not abstract...” is often a question of a more philosophical nature.

While the Armory Show featured over 225 leading international galleries exhibiting in the 2023 edition, showcasing over 800 artists from more than 35 countries, the “Dissolvement” exhibition stood out with its unique theme and diverse line-up of artists.

The Armory Show, a cornerstone of New York’s cultural landscape since its founding in 1994, brings the world’s leading international contemporary and modern art galleries to the city each year. The fair plays a leading role in the city’s position as an important cultural capital through elevated presentations, thoughtful programming, curatorial leadership, meaningful institutional partnerships, and engaging public art activations.

In addition to the Armory Show, other art fairs such as PhotoFairs New York, Independent Art Fair, and Tribeca Art Walk, as well as hundreds of local gallery openings on Manhattan and in Brooklyn, took place during the September Art Week.

The participating artists in the exhibition  were: Matias Di Carlo from Argentina/Spain, presenting sculptures in aluminum; Claudia Doring Baez from Mexico/US, presenting paintings on canvas; Angela China from the US, presenting paintings on canvas; Daniel Fleur from Sweden, presenting paintings on panel; Ellen Frances from the US, presenting paintings on canvas; Lindsay Nobel from the US, presenting sculptures in bronze; Takuma Tanaka from Japan, presenting paintings on canvas; and Johan Wahlstrom from Sweden, presenting paintings on canvas.

As Tönnheim said, “The exhibition proved that art can be appreciated and enjoyed beyond the confines of traditional definitions and boundaries”
