Nature's Nurture

A Holistic Perspective on Pet Health

With over 30 years’ experience as an energy healer and animal communicator, Sharon practices a holistic approach, influencing the health and well-being of animals through energy balancing, emotional release work, chakra balancing, and positive intentions. All the aforementioned are designed to reduce stress, pain and allow your pet to feel healthier.

In this month’s column, Sharon Melville of Heartful Animal Healing, explores different ways to incorporate holistic health into your pet’s daily routine.

Crystalline Guardians

Let's dive into the magical world of Black Obsidian crystals for our fur babies.  Black Obsidian is believed to have a grounding effect, helping to shield against negative energies and promoting a sense of safety. Think of it like a guardian angel of the crystal world.  It can be especially helpful for pets who are easily overwhelmed.

Placing a cleansed Black Obsidian in your pet's environment, near their sleeping area or favourite nook, can provide them with a comforting and protective vibe. It's like a cozy security blanket in crystal form!

Feline Fun

Cats are intelligent animals that require mental stimulation to keep their minds healthy and prevent bad behaviours. While interactive toys that challenge your cat's problem-solving abilities are a great way to keep them entertained, you can also enrich your cat's life with simple household items.

Strategically placing furniture allows your cat to jump progressively higher and develop their athleticism. You can also leave an empty delivery box out for a few days before recycling it, as cats are drawn to confined places where they can hide or sleep. Leave the top open, or close it up and cut a big hole in the side of the box.

Building vertical and horizontal scratchers for your cat is another way to provide them with stimulation. You can bring in natural elements from outside, such as a branch or fresh leaves, as cats are intrigued by new scents and textures. Finally, try folding up a towel and hide treats among the folds, placing it inside a box or paper bag for your cat to explore and stimulate their natural hunting instincts.

The Sweet Elixir of Nature

Organic black molasses can be a healthy addition to your dogs diet, offering essential minerals like iron, calcium, potassium, and B vitamins.

These minerals are essential for maintaining healthy bones and teeth, along with proper muscle function and blood clotting. Additionally, molasses contains antioxidants, which can help to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Now, let's whip up some tasty dog cookies!

Ingredients:

1/4 cup black molasses

1/4 cup peanut butter

1/4 cup water

2 cups whole wheat flour

1 tsp baking powder

(Use organic where possible.)

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350°F. (175°C.)

In a large mixing bowl, combine the molasses, peanut butter, and water.

Add in the whole wheat flour and baking powder and mix until well combined.

Roll out the dough on a floured surface and use a cookie cutter to cut out desired shapes.

Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

Allow the cookies to cool completely before serving to your furry friend.

Paws and Purpose

Volunteering is such a wonderful way to give back to your community and make a positive impact on the world. At Triple A  Animal Rescue, I have the privilege of working each month with some truly special dogs. Being able to provide healing energy to pups dealing with various health conditions is a true blessing.  It's incredibly rewarding to see them relax and feel more comfortable after a session.

The staff at the centre are incredibly dedicated and work tirelessly to provide the best care possible for the animals. Their passion for animals is evident in everything they do, and it's a privilege to be a part of such a fantastic team.

The Hands-on Approach

Horse massage, also known as equine massage therapy, offers various benefits for horses, promoting relaxation, improved circulation, muscle flexibility, and reduced tension. It can help alleviate soreness, aid in recovery after exercise, enhance bonding between the horse and the handler, and contribute to overall well-being.

To perform horse massage, start with gentle strokes and gradually apply deeper pressure as the horse relaxes. Focus on the neck, shoulders, back, hindquarters, and legs, using a combination of effleurage, kneading, and circular motions. Pay attention to the horse's response and adjust your pressure accordingly. If your horse shows signs of discomfort or pain, stop immediately

Incorporate acupressure points by applying gentle pressure on specific areas associated with horse health, such as the Bladder Meridian point for overall relaxation or the Gall Bladder Meridian point for alleviating tension and stiffness.

Overall, horse massage can be a wonderful way to bond with your horse and help promote their physical and emotional well-being.
