A holistic journey
Meet the husband and wife duo changing the face of plastic and aesthetic surgery.
Whether we care to admit it or not, we’ve all stood in front of the mirror wishing certain parts of our body looked different: tummy smaller, nose straighter, thigh gap bigger, skin less saggy…It’s natural to want to look a particular way but going to a clinic thinking one simple operation or treatment is going to fix everything isn’t exactly how it works.
At Ocean Clinic, Marbella, founder Dr Kai Kaye, and his wife and business partner, Dr Gabriela Casabona, like to take a holistic approach to their client’s treatment. “It’s not just surgical and non-surgical,” says Dr Kaye. “It’s about a person's psychological needs and desires too. Every time someone new comes to us, we’ll find out exactly what they want and then take them through all the ways we can help them achieve that, in an honest and open conversation.”
Combined, Dr Kaye and Dr Casabona have more than 30 years of experience, and are both reputable names in the industry. German-born, Dr Kaye studied in France, Los Angeles, and Munich, before moving to Spain and setting up Ocean Clinic, in 2008. He is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and specialises in multimodal facial rejuvenation, autologous fat transfer, breast augmentation, 360 degree lipo-abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and also burn surgery. When he isn’t working at the clinic, he’s writing research papers, attending internationally renowned events and lecturing at prestigious conventions.
His wife, Dr Casabona, is a medical director for aesthetic and skin cancer departments, as well as a consultant and research director. She joined Ocean Clinic in 2018, but prior to coming to Spain she had her own clinic in her home country of Brazil, for 18 years. Dr Casabona is incredibly well-travelled, and like her husband, speaks at many international events. She’s also a consultant for aesthetic medicine companies, Merz Medical and Dermapen.
Together, the couple are able to combine a variety of techniques, creating a completely unique treatment and journey for each client. “Everyone is different and it’s not always just a simple nose job or chin tuck. We have to look at a person’s anatomy first, why do they look the way they do? It could be that the jaw is set too far back, creating excess skin under the chin, making the nose look bigger than it is. Everything is linked and it’s no good doing one thing without the other.”
The Zoom Effect
For more than a year, many of us have been forced to work from home, communicating via Zoom for eight hours a day, looking at ourselves from all angles...in HD. Suddenly, bags, excess skin, and dark circles all seem much more prominent and we start fixating on them in every video conference. This has led to an increase in facial treatments.
Masks have also had a part to play. As Dr Kaye says, when you cover someone's mouth and nose, you’re only left with the eyes and the forehead to stare at. “The aesthetic market has been in growth for over 15 years. This year especially, we’ve seen more and more people interested in cosmetic and surgical treatments.
“It’s not just the ‘Zoom Effect’ either. When the world was in lockdown and people couldn't travel or go out, they saved money and now they’re treating themselves - it’s as much a part of a person’s well-being as going to the gym or getting a massage is.”
Ocean Clinic offers everything from facelifts and fat grafting to breast and buttock augmentation, as well as fillers, deep peeling and botulinum toxin. Following treatment, clients are given a full aftercare package, including lasers to reduce bruising, and massages, which help with the recovery process.
