High Tea by the Sea

When Debbie Wingham, famed for creating the world’s most luxurious edible art, invited me to experience her exclusive “Afternoon Tea” aboard a stunning 90ft yacht in Puerto Banús, I couldn’t resist. Known as the “Countess of Confection” for her record-breaking culinary masterpieces—including the world’s most expensive dress and multi-million-dollar cakes—Debbie has now reimagined the traditional British afternoon tea into an accessible yet opulent experience.

Set aboard The Malex, a magnificent Maiora 26DP yacht docked at Puerto Banús’ prestigious Pier Zero, the afternoon promised glamour, indulgence, and innovation. Brigitte Nielsen, the iconic actress and model, graced the event with her vibrant presence, adding a touch of Hollywood to the Costa del Sol.

A New Twist on Afternoon Tea

Debbie Wingham has already made waves with her original “World’s Most Expensive Afternoon Tea,” a bespoke experience crafted for an extraordinary £58,000. This latest take retains the glamour but makes it affordable, starting at €89 per person—a treat for locals and visitors alike. The concept offers a taste of Wingham’s signature luxury without diamonds, but with all the imaginative flair.

As I boarded The Malex, the atmosphere was both chic and welcoming. The yacht’s elegant interiors and panoramic views of the Mediterranean set the stage for a truly memorable afternoon. Debbie’s reinterpretation of afternoon tea featured creative displays and gourmet treats, each detail meticulously designed to evoke her unique blend of art and culinary mastery.

The finger sandwiches were served on a handbag-inspired platter, a playful nod to her fashion-forward aesthetic. Traditional tiered trays were swapped for crocodile leather details and golden accents—a reflection of Debbie’s ability to merge functionality with art.

For dessert, the pastries transported us to a whimsical dressing room, with edible perfume bottles and jewellery-tray-inspired chocolates stealing the show. Even the teapot carried a touch of magic, adorned with charming motifs that mirrored Debbie’s garden in Andalusia, from which she sourced the ingredients.

Adding a theatrical twist, guests sweetened their tea using “Eau de Sucre,” a designer-inspired sugar syrup served in a perfume bottle. It was impossible not to smile as we delicately spritzed sweetness into our cups—a playful and Instagram-worthy detail that encapsulated the afternoon’s charm.

This is an afternoon tea designed for today’s world. The whimsical presentation, from milk served in pop-culture-inspired containers to champagne displayed in a stiletto heel holder, was a feast for both the palate and the eyes. The yacht provided the perfect backdrop, with the gentle sea breeze and stunning marina views elevating the experience to new heights.

Brigitte Nielsen, dressed in timeless elegance, mingled effortlessly with guests, sharing her enthusiasm for the event. Her presence underscored the draw of Wingham’s vision: blending high-end artistry with the warmth of shared experiences.

Making Luxury Accessibl

The original afternoon tea experience was a one-of-a-kind event, complete with diamond embellishments and a jaw-dropping price tag. This new iteration, however, retains all the elegance but at a fraction of the cost. With three sittings offered weekly, it’s an opportunity to indulge in a unique culinary adventure without breaking the bank.

The collaboration with The Malex, a family-run yacht charter business, adds a personal touch to the affair. Owners Martyn and Nicole Jupp shared their excitement for making this luxurious offering a fixture in Puerto Banús, providing visitors and locals with a taste of opulence.

As the event drew to a close, I found myself reflecting on how Debbie Wingham’s vision transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. Her Afternoon Tea isn’t just about the food—it’s about creating an experience, a moment to savour and share.

This is an invitation to indulge in a taste of luxury, set against the shimmering backdrop of the Costa del Sol. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply treating yourself, Debbie Wingham’s Afternoon Tea aboard The Malex offers a slice of glamour at an accessible price.
